BS Bone – Inside Insanity (Demo) [EP REVIEW]

It seems to be the era of EPs.

BS Bone is a trio from Molise, Italy. From the look of their pictures, they seem to be straight up bad-asses capable of destroying a lowly music geek such as myself. Especially guitarist Steve Grind, who seems to be sporting a rather impressive and well groomed beard. Please, be gentle on me, I bruise easily. Even though, chances are, I won’t be on you – in a journalistic sense, that is.

Now, the name BS Bone really does not shed any light on what this band really does. In fact, either does the demo’s cover. Going into this release, I didn’t really know what to expect. Perhaps punk? No. This is some late 80’s inspired metal right here! In fact, if you want a pretty much spot on comparison – it’s as if Celtic Frost kept down the Cold Lake route, but became substantially better. Yeah, lead vocalist Vyper sounds almost on par with Tom Warrior’s Cold Lake era effort. Its uncanny, but not unwelcoming. I really think BS Bone has a good grasp on what they want out of their music, and that is basically to be a part of the heavy metal sound they clearly love.

For so few tracks, BS Bone keeps things relatively lively by presenting some variety outside of merely rock. Punk influence is clearly weaved throughout the fibers of this little demo, with Dysfunctional Souls probably serving as the strongest example of this. Singer and backing vocals simply shout the song name, whilst a simple but effective riff is played in the background. It’s a nice touch, truly. However, what is surprising for me is that the band included things such as breakdowns and tempo shifts, both of which can be experienced on the latter half of the song I Don’t Give A Fuck.

For a self-produced demo, BS Bone really showcases what people can do at home these days. I’ll admit, there are a few dips in volume here and there that aren\’t too noticeable, and the bass needs a bit more punch to it. As well, I feel like the music really needs more space to it. As in, perhaps something done to widen the sound just a little. Things like this, honestly, are mostly just taste. Despite the fact that BS Bone defies the norm for the hard-rock/heavy metal image, they got the chops and skill to bring it to you in a very genuine form. These boys have some love for what they make, and that is to be respected.
